Arkansas Birth Control Site Redesign and Accessibility Improvements

Client Background:

The Arkansas Birth Control organization is a critical resource for residents of Arkansas, offering comprehensive information on birth control options and reproductive health. The site’s objective is to make it easier for users to locate relevant information, understand their options, and access vital resources.

Project Goals:

1. Redesign the “Where to Get Birth Control” page, maintaining existing content while adding visual enhancements for better navigation and accessibility.

2. Implement WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards sitewide to ensure inclusivity for users with disabilities.

3. Enhance mobile responsiveness for the “Explore Birth Control Methods” section, creating a seamless experience across devices with a swipeable interface on smaller screens.

4. Add a “The Latest” section on the homepage to showcase current content in a consistent and visually cohesive manner.

Challenges and Solutions:

1. Redesign Challenges:

• Challenge: Ensuring the “Concerns About Cost” section highlighted essential information without overcrowding the page or sacrificing readability.

• Solution: Developed a new callout design that draws user attention to critical details while preserving a clear visual hierarchy.

2. Accessibility Improvements:

• Challenge: The site faced accessibility issues, including duplicate IDs, missing form labels, and inadequate contrast on buttons, all of which impacted usability.

• Solution: Addressed each issue systematically, adding unique IDs, form labels, and contrast adjustments to meet accessibility standards. Fixed empty headings and adjusted viewport tags to support text zoom on mobile for users needing larger fonts.

3. Responsive Design for Mobile:

• Challenge: Users on mobile devices struggled to explore birth control methods due to lack of responsiveness.

• Solution: Implemented a mobile-friendly slider for the “Explore Birth Control Methods” section, making navigation intuitive for small screens. For the “The Latest” section on the homepage, I aligned the design with desktop functionality to ensure a consistent user experience across platforms.

Deployment and Testing:

• Incremental Deployment: The redesign was deployed in stages to ensure stability and avoid disruption to the live site.

• Testing Across Devices: Thorough testing was conducted on desktop and mobile to verify accessibility, visual consistency, and functionality improvements.

Results:

• Enhanced User Experience: The redesign resulted in a more visually appealing, accessible site, allowing users to engage with key information more effectively.

• Improved Accessibility Compliance: The site now meets WCAG 2.1 standards, significantly improving usability for individuals with disabilities.

• Positive Client Feedback: The client reported a noticeable decrease in usability issues, with users appreciating the site’s enhanced accessibility and navigation.

Client Testimonial:

“Neel’s attention to detail and commitment to accessibility have transformed our website. It’s now easier for our visitors to navigate, and the design improvements amplify our message. We’re extremely satisfied with the results and highly recommend Neel’s services.”

Value Added:

• Strategic UX Enhancements: Redesigning crucial sections and refining the visual hierarchy allowed users to find important information quickly, enhancing the overall site experience.

• Accessibility Compliance: Meeting accessibility standards has broadened the site’s audience and reinforced Arkansas Birth Control’s commitment to inclusivity.

• Sustainable Improvements: These usability and accessibility enhancements provide lasting value, reducing the need for frequent updates and supporting ongoing compliance with accessibility standards.
